The ancient city was founded in the 6th century before Crist with the name of Posidonia by Greek colonists. The current name Paestum derives from dialect lucano Paistom. The extension of its habitat is still recognizable today, enclosed by its Greek walls, as well as modified in the Lucan and then Roman times. It is located in the Piana del Sele, near the coast in the gulf of Salerno, north of the Cilento National Park e Vallo di Diano and Alburni.

Elea, named in the Roman times Velia, is an ancient polis of Magna Grecia. Hellenistic culture center and fulcrum of a philosophical school. The archaeological site is located in the Piana di Velia district, in the municipality of Ascea in the province of Salerno, inside the Cilento National Park and Vallo di Diano.
